Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency / ARPA

ARPA was created in 1958 by President Eisenhower in response to the launch of Sputnik 1 to form and research projects that expanded technology and science.

In 1960 all of its civil space programs were transfered to the newly formed NASA and its name changed to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
