To test the Orion Launch Abort System (LAS), a capsule test article was placed on top of an old SR-118 Peacekeeper first stage powered by a TU-903 motor, and launched on July 2, 2019.

The Orion Abort Test Booster (ATB) vehicle was specially built for the Ascent Abort-2 test out of Cape Canaveral SLC-46.

This was the fifth Orion test flight after MLAS (2009), Ares I-X (2009), Pad Abort-1 (2010) & Exploration Flight Test-1 (2014).
