Solid Motor Upper Stages

The Burner and ISS upper stages were solid rocket motors equiped by Boeing with 3-axis control. They flew from 1965 to 2003 on Thor, Atlas and Titan Rockets.

Burner 1 had two variants. The first was built around an LPC MG-18 stage and launched twice, the second around an UTC Altair 3 with FW-4S (XSR-57-UT-1) motor and launched four times, both on Thor-LV2D.

Burner 2 and 2A used the Thiokol Star-37B (TE-M-364-2) motor. Burner 2 could be combined with a Star-13A (TE-M-516) upper stage, and Burner 2A used the Star-26B (TE-M-442-1) upper stage. The stages flew on Thor-LV2F, once on Atlas-SLV3 and once on Atlas-F.

A further development of the Burner concept was the Integrated Stage System (ISS) which featured four hydrazine thrusters and was part of the DMSP Block 5D1 and 5D2, TIROS-N and NOAA 6-14 weather satellites. It consisted of an optional Star-37XE (TE-M-714-4) first stage and a Star-37S (TE-M-364-15) or Star-37XFP (TE-M-714-17/18) second stage and flew on Thor-LV2F, Atlas-E/F and the Titan-23G launch vehicles.

Atlas Rocket Family
The Atlas rockets were a Convair development of the SM-65 Atlas missile, which was first tested on December 17, 1957. Having no inherent structural stability, the core sustainer stage needed to be pressurized when vertical.
Thor-Delta Rocket Family
The Thor-Delta family of rockets first launched in 1958 and lofted a multitude of satellites, space probes and spacecraft. It evolved from the PGM-17 Thor IRBM booster into the Delta IV Heavy launch vehicle.
Titan Rocket Family
Voted Most Patchy of all rocket families, the first ICBM based, Martin built Titan-2 vehicle launched the Gemini 1 test capsule on April 8, 1964.
