Yuzhnoye & Yuzhmash

OKB-586, Southern State Design Bureau and Machine-Building Plant

Yuzhnoye and Yuzhmash have been building rockets, satellites and engines since the start of the space age. It built the Antares first stage and the RD-843 engine for the Vega AVUM upper stage.

OKB-586

Established in 1951 as the OKB-586, the Soviet Experimental Design Bureau (OKB) mainly built hypergolic ICBMs, which it would later develop into the Cosmos, Tsyklon, Dnepr and Zenit space launch vehicles.

It developed the DS, AUOS and Tselina satellite families, built the LK lunar lander descent engine, and the Zenit rocket would be used as the booster on the Energiya launch vehicle.

Yuzhnoye & Yuzhmash

After the fall of the Soviet Union OKB-586 ended up in Ukraine, renaming to the Yuzhnoye Design Office, with associated Yuzhmash Machine-Building Plant.

It built the YuzhSat, Mikrosat, Ionosat, Micron, Okean and Sich satellites, designed and built the first stage on the Antares rocket, and the RD-843 engine for the AVUM upper stage of Vega and Vega-C.

It is also planning the Cyclone-4M, based on the Zenit first stage, to be launched from Nova Scotia.
